In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem's capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.


The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The opening ceremony of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long was held in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) and hundreds more cyclists.

"The launch of the tunnel project is another element of the progress of Jerusalem as well as its transformation to an attractive tourism destination for all across Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin who is in charge of the project along with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city's tourism growth and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. The project was financed by the Elkin's department and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the idea to alter the notion of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as the ones that will be paved within its neighborhoods. It's designed to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green movement in the capital."

In the 1990s in the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is currently used for infrastructure purposes and houses the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.

Road construction, installation , and testing of safety and electrical systems are just a few of the ongoing efforts to ensure the tunnel is safe for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo , as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
