The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin as well as Moshe Lion, the Mayor. Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists also attended.

The project was funded by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to change the way we think about transport in Jerusalem." Elkin said that the new tunnel connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its various neighborhoods. This will increase cycling and encourage green transportation in the capital.



The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

Current projects include road construction, installation blowers, and advanced security systems to ensure the tunnel is secure for everyone to use throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to special recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as well as the natural springs of historical significance Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
